HOW TO REDUCE SAFELY

In these columns during the next few weeks there will be printed a series of instructions and observations on methods of losing weight safely. If these instructions are saved it will mean that an overweight person can reduce without danger.

Will-the temptations are so very great--and are so easily gratified. How good the pies can look to the person attempting to lose--how desirable are the mealy white potatoes with butter melting and oozing down to the plate. These pitfalls are too much for almost any average person-it requires the strength of ten to withstand them.

People will state: "Well, Doctor, I don't eat anything and yet I don't lose weight."

Losing weight requires, first of all, an exceptionally strong will. "I only drink a glass of water for breakfast, and eat a slice of bread for dinner and practically nothing at evening." Even a child could see there is a fallacy in such a statement. If the diet is properly curtailed, there must be a loss of weight. It may be compared to putting money in a bank. If none is added, the account must remain small." If much money is deposited the account will stay fat.

Self-denial and self-control are the two important factors required. To these are to be added the requirement of intelligent effort. *There are only two ways intelligently to lose weight-either by dieting or by exercise,-or, of course, a combination of the two. The combination is probably the best for most people. The average person who will follow the diet to be given here will be able to lose from four to nine pounds, if the weight is taken at the end of the first two week's period. The first three days will be the most difficult-after that dieting is comparatively easy--in fact, after that you will wonder how you ever ate so much. The general health should be good before starting the diet.
