The David T. Howard School has been granted a charter in the National Honor Society. The school received the official charter last Wednesday and the first public announcement of the charter grant was made the school's Honor Day Program March 19 at the Wheat Street Baptist Church.
For the last few years Howard School has put great emphasis on scholarship. In line with this policy, and in order to further encourage the students to attain high scholarship averages, the principal, Mr. C. L. Gideons, started the plan of having semi-annual Honor Day Programs. For the last four years, these programs have been held regularly during the fall and spring of the school year. Great improvement in the school's scholastic standing has been made as a result of these Honor Day Programs. The chairman of the Honor Day Committee, M. R. Austell, stated that each semester from ten to fifteen per cent of the students made the honor roll. Last semester, 17 per cent of the twelfth grade students made the honor roll and ten per cent of the entire student body was on the scholastic roll or honor.
As a means of further encouraging students scholastically, the school applied for membership in the National Honor Society. After spending several weeks investigating the records and standing of the school, the National Honor Society was satisfied with the high calibre of work being done at the David T. Howard School and as a result, the charter was granted.
The National Honor Society was founded by secondary-school principals in 1921 to stimulate scholarship and recognize outstanding qualities of leadership, service, and character in the students of secondary schools.
At the present time, there are about 3,500 chapters in public and private accredited secondary schools located in all states in the Union.
Within the next few days, the David T. Howard School will have an induction ceremony and those students who have measured up to the four cardinal principles of the society, viz.: scholarship, character, leadership, and service, will become the charter members of the David T. Howard Chapter of the National Honor Society.
M. R. Austell is sponsor of the local chapter at the school.
