BEAUTIES OF POPULAR SOVEREIGNTY

How long is it since every Democratic tongue was vocal with the praises of popular sovereignty? No longer ago than the era of Kansas, when it was thought by the party that slavery might be more readily extended by it! What now is the situation in reference to that doctrine? Why the Democrats apply it with most vigor to the rebels in the Seceded States, and demand its recognition so far as they are concerned in withdrawing from the Union; but as to the North they seem generally disposed to resist it in opposing the draft. They are not willing to let the majority rule. The people, through their representations in Congress, provided for the draft by a large majority which was a clear exercise of the right of popular sovereignty. Why not abide by this decision till it can be reversed in the Constitutional way? Can you not trust the people to vote it down? Or are you determined to apply the doctrine only in the interest of slavery and dun it when freedom is concerned? Oh, Democrat, thou art a strange reptile, and thy name is Copperhead!
