ELGIN, Ill. (AP) - To preserve national security and the peace of the world, says fleet admiral Ernest J. King, the U. S. navy must be ready to beat the enemy to the punch-and at a distance.
"We must be ready to keep the seaways open, no less for our welfare than for our security," the wartime navy commander said last night at the Elgin Academy winter forum.
"We must establish our overseas line of defense thousands of miles from the American mainland and ... be able to act quickly and effectively."
The navy's first task, he said, is to preserve the security of the United States, the second the security of the western hemisphere, and the third the peace of the world.
