Senator Gore narrowly escaped death at Kaukesha, Wis., Sunday afternoon, when an insane Pole, Charles Schomalia, attacked him with a club while the Senator was speaking. The Pole was sitting near the stage, and in the midst of the Senator's speech suddenly leaped to the stage, drawing a club from under his overcoat, and swung at the Senator's head.
One of the men on the stage, Judge P. C. Harlin, was quicker than the maniac, and knocked Schomalia off the stage before the blow landed. The Senator, who is blind, did not know of his danger and was unaware of the trouble until the man was being overpowered by the audience.
Gore had arrived here this afternoon campaigning for Governor Wilson. Judge Harmon had introduced him and had taken his seat while Senator Gore was proceeding with his address. His speech was nearly half ended when the Pole jumped to the platform.
