Hampton And Lincoln
Win In Big Carnival

HAMPTON INSTITUTE, Va.-(SNS) Registering five
technical knockouts in the trials, and capturing six titles in the
finals, the Hampton Institute mittmen won the third Annual C.I.
A. Boxing Tournament 6 to 1 while the scrappy grapplers from
Lincoln University (Pa.) took the Wrestling Championship 5 to 1.
More than two thousand enthusiastic fans witnessed the two days of
fighting in which twenty-one matches were staged. Following the
strict rules of the National Collegiate Athletic Association of
which the C.I.A. is a member, the tournament was hailed an
overwhelming success.

Because it is the highest that Negro boxers and wrestlers
have attained and because of the growing interest fans as well as
contestants are showing, these sports are expected to be among the
leading in the C.I.A. program in the near future. Already other
colleges in the conference have shown their desire to be represent-
ed at the tournaments and next year's matches will probably
prove to be even more interesting.

Virginia State College, Lincoln University, Howard Univer-
sity, and Hampton Institute were the four schools represented.
The Virginia State team which entered the tournament for the
first time, made an encouraging showing by having two contestants
qualify for the finals.

Among the outstanding features
which contributed to the success of
the tournament were the excellent
close officiating, and the high re-
spect that the huge audience paid
to the contestants while competing.

Though the encounters were excit-
ing, the fans were able to withhold
their emotions until the particular
round or match was finished, then
in thunderous applause the elec-
trified spectators would manifest
their high interest.

The boxing bouts were refereed
by Arthur "Al" Lind, Coach at the
135th Street Y.M.C.A. in New York City,
who at one time held the Metro-
politan Light Weight Crown, while
the wrestling matches were refereed
by J.H. Tilghman, former Southern
Conference Intercollegiate Champ-
ion.

Boxing Holds Interest

Coach Herman Nielsen's charges
who have been drilling strenuously
throughout the season, took six
of the eight boxing matches staged
in the trials by scoring five tech-
nical knockouts and capturing six
out of the seven bouts in the finals.

The first fight in the finals
brought together Howard Otho, 117
(Hampton) and Harry Willoughby,
118 (Lincoln). Throughout the bout
Otho proved to be the more ag-
gressive, but was unable to defend
himself against Willoughby's stiff
left hand jabs. After three rounds
of thick fighting, Willoughby
emerged victoriously in a close de-
csion.

In the 125 lb class, William
Embry, 126 1/2 (Hampton) won
over Ptolemy Corbiere, 126 (How-
ard) in a narrow decision after
three rounds of stiff mit slinging.
Both fighters struggled at even
terms during the first two rounds
while Embry drove a hard right
to Corbiere's body to turn the tide
at the beginning of the third. Cor-
biere, a product of the Virgin Is-
lands, showed excellent style and
foot work.

Dallas Coleman, 133 (Hampton)
one of the keenest and most shifty
fighters in the tournament, set
James Henderson, 136, of Howard
down in a technical knockout at
the beginning of the second round.
Using an assortment of hard
punches to the head and body,
Coleman weakened his opponent in
the first few minutes and was pre-
paring for the kill as referee Lind
stepped in to stop the fight.

Competing in one of the most
heated fights in the tournament
Paul Richardson, 141 1/2, of Vir-
ginia State met Joel Hunt, 148 1/2
(Hampton). Richardson, a south-
paw who hails from Auburn, New
York, fought Hunt on even terms
for two rounds, but was unable to
cope with the latter's shifty foot-
work and stiff body punches in the
third. Hunt won 3-2-1 decision.

Josephus Lee, 155 1/2 (Hampton)
the 1935 holder of the Senior Wel-
terweight title, won over William
Merchant, 150 (Lincoln) in a
technical knockout in the third
round of a heated, exciting battle.
Merchant had a slight edge over
the champion in the opening round.
Exploding in the middle of the sec-
ond, Lee rained damaging punches
to Merchant's body and face that
sent him to the ropes groggy with a
cut on the face. Referee Lind, fol-
lowing the strict rules of intercol-
legiate boxing, stepped in to stop
the fight giving Lee a technical
knock out. Both boxers proved to
be hard hitters as well as experi-
enced ringmen.
