"It is with pleasure I embrace the earliest opportunity of acquainting you of our safe arrival in this country--Our march to Fort Pitt was not the most agreeable--the weather was wet, and the road excessively muddy-but our own sufferings would scarcely deserve the name, compared with the distress of others, and I will defy any person, whose heart is not composed of adamant, to have suppressed the tear of pity, on beholding what I am about to relate. One cold wet day, on the Alleghany mountain, a family, consisting of a man, his wife, about half a dozen girls, and a small boy, were ascending a steep, muddy and stony hill, (their property consisted of a small cart drawn by a very poor horse, two pots, a frying pan, some provisions, and a few bed cloaths) before they had advanced many steps their horse stopped, and they were obliged to take out a pot, to guard which one of the females was left; a few steps higher they found it necessary to take out the other pot; in short, before they had gained the summit, the whole family were dispersed, the master with the empty cart and the horse tired-to add to the distress of these poor people, a heavy shower of rain fell at the instant never were a set of mortals in a more pitiable condition.
----Surely you will say there must be some magic charm, some unaccountable infatuation, which leads poor souls through thick and thin to an imaginary enjoyment of the Western country,-but it is not, my friend, only imaginary-what would I not give to have your company only for one week-I would shew you nature and nature's works in perfection."
