The Election in this County.

The election in this county, as well as throughout the state, we confess, resulted differently from what we anticipated. But when we consider the great exertions made by the Van Buren party, and the apparent indifference, and utter negligence of the whigs, we are not surprised. The locofocos circulated their papers, without number, filled with articles calculated to deceive the people; night and day the leaders of the party preached locofocoism to their followers, making them believe that unless they could secure a Van Buren Governor and a majority in the legislature, that Banks and corporations would ruin the state. Consequently I do not believe there were fifty locofoco voters in the whole county, but what were out to the polls. How was it with the Whigs? Comparatively, nothing was done. The whigs counted too much upon their strength, and the justness of their cause. It was thought the falsehoods so industriously circulated by the Democrat, and the leaders of the party in this county, would have no effect upon the people, as they had seen so much of the same kind of party tactics. In every town in the county, so far as we have been able to learn, there were many whigs who did not leave their homes on the day of election; and others, who were out, neglected to vote.

Where were the Whigs of Vernon, Halifax, Marlboro, Whitingham, Stratton Newfane? In each of these towns there is a majority of Whigs—in some of them large majorities. We have lost several Representatives, where three or four votes would have secured the election of whigs. There have been no changes in the county. There are as many whigs in Windham County as in the fall of 1838. We confidently believe they will remain "cleansed" from every stain of locofocoism; but this fall, so far as Representatives are concerned, we are compelled to ask, "where are the Whigs."

We hope this fall's experience will arouse the whigs to a sense of their duty. Nothing is wanting but for the whigs to come out and vote, and they will distance their opponents by more than a thousand votes. Arouse, Whigs of Windham County; shake off the lethargy which kept you at home on the day of our last election, and commence your work ere the enemy has bound you hand and foot. "Let truth and error grapple"—and we have no fears for the result. We hope every true Democratic Whig will remember and do his duty the year ensuing. Arouse, arouse to action, we say again,—the cause in which you are engaged demands your highest efforts.

THE SPEAKER.—The Tories are making great efforts to secure the election of a Van Buren speaker, this fall. They are sending circulars all through the State, urging the tory members to be on the ground the day before the sitting of the legislature. In their zeal to drum out their forces, they have addressed their circular to some of the most staunch whigs in this county. We hope every true whig will take the hint, and be on hand to meet them. We thank them for the information they have given some of the good whigs of the county.
