Old Belt Loans Buy 36% Bright Leaf

Deliveries slackened last week as the 1953 Old Belt marketing season drew near to an end. Gross sales totaled 20,552,903 pounds for an average of $33.74 per hundred. The average was $1.39 under the previous low of last week. Sales for the season were placed at 231,886,447 pounds averaging $43.

A small increase in the percentage of nondescript lowered the general quality. Principal offerings remained poor to fair leaf and nondescript.

The turnover to the Flue-cured Stabilization Corporation under the Government loan program was around 59 per cent of gross sales. Season deliveries were approximately 35 per cent of sales.

Brookneal, Chase City and Lawrenceville closed December 11. Petersburg and Martinsville, will close Dec. 16. Clarksville will close Dec. 18. Danville and South Boston will close for the Christmas holidays but will re-open January 11. and run through January 15.
