SPRINGFIELD, January 21.
Mr. JOHN ASHLEY, an industrious and respectable farmer, now living in West-Springfield, and a member of the Church there, some years since gave to the church a fund sufficient for the support of the communion table, and to the parish a valuable library and a tract of ground for the purpose of burying the dead. In addition to those benefactions, he has lately given to the same parish the sum of 333 dollars, to lie as a perpetual fund for the support of the ministry. A singular example of Christian liberality! There have been instances of legacies given for charitable uses to be appropriated after the donor's decease. But such a donation, not merely intended by will, but actually executed by the donor's hand, has rarely been known. We gaze with momentary surprise at the brilliant actions of heroes in pursuit of glory; but we more calmly admire, and longer remember the pious, pure and disinterested benefactions of the Christian, in support of that benevolent and divine religion, which is calculated to diffuse peace and good will on earth, and intended to insure a happy immortality above the skies.
