The annunciation is formally made, that a Convention of the Democratic party will be held in Raleigh on the 8th of January next, to nominate a candidate for Governor.
The Editor of the Fayetteville "Carolinian," although he "will readily yield to the views of the majority of [his] party," takes occasion to make the following observations, which we consider to be true in their application to the Governor:
Greensborough Patriot.
"As we have before said, we were opposed to a convention if a candidate could be agreed upon by the party through the publicity of the Press. But we are also of opinion that if Governor Graham consents to be the whig candidate (which we much doubt however,) that the democratic party would do better not to nominate an opponent. Because it is very rarely that the people of any State will turn out an incumbent of the Executive office, if he has ruled with discretion, and forwarded the interest of the people to the best of his ability. We have instances of the truth of what we say at almost every election where the incumbent stands a second canvass. It is the interest of the Democratic party to have a majority in the Legislature. There is the place where whig rule can do mischief. The Governor can do no mischief. And what little patronage he has is not worth the name. We believe, too, that we speak the sentiments of a large portion of the democrats in this region."
