Augusta, (Kennebeck) Dec. 1.

Firm support of the Laws by energetic measures.

The Sedition Pole, around the foot of which were burnt the Alien and Sedition Acts, recently erected in Vassalborough (District of Maine) by Charles Webber, and a few other misguided followers, disorganizers and revilers of our virtuous administration, on Tuesday last met its merited fate. Capt. James Brackett, of that town, in a manly and spirited manner, at the head of his Company, who not only volunteered themselves on the occasion, but were extremely urgent that he should lead them to the spot, placing the axe at the root of the tree, gave orders for his men to annihilate it ; in a few minutes it was prostrate on the ground, and although 85 feet long, was almost instantaneously hewed into pieces, with the colours on its top, "so that no more remembrance of so offensive an object might be seen among men, or Americans," while the ringleader of the jacobian party stood trembling with fear, and knitting his huge brows with unavailing indignation. The Company, after completing their object retired in an orderly and quiet manner, without offering the least abuse (tho' richly deserving) to any one.
