A Party of Treasure Hunters Give Back Shot for Shot.
Jackson, Miss., Sept. 7.-Jackson is in the midst of a big sensation to-day. In the suburbs of the city at 2 o'clock this morning a party of men were caught digging for treasures, it is supposed. The gentleman on whose premises the excavations were made, Mr. Bret Hart, got up at that hour and seeing the intruders, fired at them. They returned the shots with large interest and ran. This morning Hart visited the place and found a trench dug ten feet long five feet deep and four feet wide, also an iron rod that had been used in sticking innumerable holes roundabout.
Who the diggers were and what they were after no one can imagine. The police and hundreds of citizens have visited the scene to-day and the theory is that somebody is digging for buried treasures.
The spot is one on which one of the bloodiest battles of the closing days of the war was fought and where confederate forces under Gen. Dan Adams won a decided victory, putting the federals to flight and killing a large number.
The impression prevails here that some soldier engaged in that battle buried valuables beneath the big oak tree and after a lapse of years is looking for his fortune.
