Miss Marble Wins Essex

MANCHESTER, Mass., Aug. 17--(UP)--Defending champion Alice Marble of Beverly Hills, Calif., won her fourth singles title of the Essex Country Club invitation tournament today by defeating 21-year-old Pauline Betz of Los Angeles, 6-2, 6-2.

Despite the score, the match lasted 40 minutes and every game in the second set but two went to deuce. Miss Betz, ranked eighth nationally, had six service aces but failed to reach Miss Marble's good sideline placements and drop shots. Miss Marble won the match point with a sparkling passing placement.
