REVIVAL OF THE SLAVE TRADE.

Not content with having, during the late war, smuggled enormous quantities of British dry-goods, the Spanish authorities at Amelia Island, it is said, have it in contemplation to draw great numbers of Africans, (and no doubt many Spanish West Indian negroes among them) from Havanna, for the purpose of clandestinely introducing them into this state and South Carolina.—This is a bold step, as the consequence of detection is confiscation & death, but there are men who will encounter any danger for the sake of profit. It is the duty of our government, a duty it owes to humanity and the laws of our country to counteract the enterprize of those avaricious tigers. The means are simple and sure.—Two well equipped brigs would be competent: one to cruise off the bar, capture and bring to justice such Americans as illegally shelter themselves under the prostituted flag of Spain—the other, anchored off Point Peter, and keeping every night look-out boats from Rose's Bluff to Cumberland Point. This would render all attempts at smuggling futile, except the rogues should cross over their live merchandize from the southern part of the island to the Floridian shore, and pass the St. Mary's a considerable way up.

The prevention of the latter step, the duty and interest of our country people ought to make a matter of emulation; as, besides its being a violation of our laws, the introduction of Spanish negroes would be found to be as pernicious as scattering the brigands of St. Domingo over our country.

Our supplication is, let us rest in peace—& this depends entirely upon the speedy remedy which government may apply to the existing evil.
