General-One-Note
Like an old circuit minister, Gen. Eisenhower has apparently
fashioned one sermon which he delivers on every public occasion. The
text is taken from the Union League's Clubs philippic against an
"ever-expanding federal government," with the general expounding
the glories of the "middle road" where projects like national-aid-to-
education are spurned as detours to despotism. The General delivered
his speech to the American Bar Association on Labor Day. It ran true
to form, even to the General's condemning "bias and prejudice" be-
cause "...individual freedom is our most precious possession. It is
...the central target of all enemies internal and external...who seek
to weaken or destroy the American Republic." This time the General's
stock speech left us unusually sad. Seven New Jersey lawyers who
happen to be Negroes were absent from Eisenhower's audience be-
cause with few exceptions the ABA practices an unwritten rule of
"for white attorneys only." The General didn't mention their absence.
His eyes were fixed on higher generalizations, which nobody could
deny. Editorial in the N. Y. Post.
