STANZAS.
God of the tempest and the storm,
God of the swelling sea,
God of midnight and of morn,
God of eternity!
Before thine awful frown, the earth
Is shaken to its base;
The eternal hills, a mighty birth,
Bow low before thy face.
Thy thunder rolls along the sky,
The deep lifts up its voice,
Thy lightning swiftly glanceth by,
The heaving waves rejoice.
Thine arm of might is stretched abroad
To succor and to save,—
Thy mandate, peace—and at thy word
Is hushed the roaring wave.
God of silence and of space,
God of the noiseless air,
God of mercy, God of grace,
Receive our humble prayer!
