NEW YORK (—Panic developed today when fire broke out in a subway train near the 86th Street station of the Lexington Avenue line.
Acrid smoke, apparently from a short circuit, poured through the cars and early reports said about 25 persons were injured or made ill.
A group of about 20 persons pushed through the doors and climbed to an emergency exit, only to find themselves momentarily trapped by a sidewalk grating. The group, including many high school students, screamed and shouted.
The shouts attracted a man in a nearby church. He obtained a crowbar and pried open the grating, releasing the trapped passengers.
The fire broke out at 8:01 a.m., in a seven-car southbound local enroute to Brooklyn Bridge. About 150 yards north of the 86th Street section, a contact shoe that takes power from the third rail became stuck and smoke poured through the first two cars.
Passengers became panicky when the smoke spread to other cars. Car windows were broken as riders sought to escape.
