If plans approved by city council Monday night materialize, Ypsilanti will soon have a new, modern union bus station at 316 W. Michigan Ave.
The bus company officials proposed to build a fireproof building at that site with ample provision for loading and unloading passengers under canopy shelters. The plan carries the proviso however that the city guarantee not to change bus routes for a five year period, during which a lease will be held on the property. The bus company has a right to renew the lease for ten years and would require the city to also allow use of the same routes during the additional time. Streets and walk committee, to which the matter was referred approved the plan subject to approval of the city attorney.
It is planned to construct a building 25 feet wide and 50 feet long, with loading and unloading platforms to the east and north. Exit for buses would be to Michigan Ave, directly from the station and entrance would be from Pearson St. It will be necessary to widen Pearson St to allow room for the buses and parking at the west end will be prohibited. Parking on Hamilton St. will also be restricted to allow safe passage of the buses.
Plans call for rest rooms, waiting room, ticket and periodical booth.
During construction, which the bus company hopes to start within the next few weeks, permission to return buses to old route was asked. City council favored this but not until actual construction is begun.
