Secretary to the Society for the Encouragement of
Arts, &c. in London. February 12, 1765:
Published by Orders of the Dublin Society.
I believe I mentioned in a former letter that we were then upon an experiment
of tanning with oak saw dust: it has completely
answered, to the full conviction even of those tanners who at first opposed it: the saw-dust tans not
only as well as the bark, but in a much shorter
time.
The Dublin Society give this piece of information to the public, as they have offered a premium of 20l. to the person who shall well and sufficiently
tan leather with any ingredient, which can be
obtained in quantity, bark excepted, satisfactory
experiments being made of the efficacy of such
ingredients in tanning. The said premium is to
be adjudged on Thursday the 12th of November
next.
