By the South Carolina Gazette of the 9th ult. brought here on Thursday last by Capt. Gardiner from that Port, we learn, That the Cherokee Indians had again broke out in open Hostilities, as soon as the Governor and his Army had left Keowee and returned, notwithstanding the Treaty of Peace and Friendship lately concluded and agreed upon between Governor Lyttelton, and that Tribe. That they had already killed and massacred about 50 Men, Women and Children; and on the 25th of January, a Body of 200 of them were gone to besiege Fort Prince George, and then to fall on the back Settlements of that Province: That a great many French Indians were come into the Cherokees; and that the latter had cut one Kelly's Body into Pieces, which they hung upon Poles. That one Indian called the Mortar was arrived among the Cherokees, with 100 Creeks, but on what Errand was not known. That these Accounts were brought and delivered under Oath by Several Persons who were taken and escaped from the Indians: That the General Assembly had been sitting upon this Account; and it was thought the Governor would make a Campaign against the Cherokees of quite a different Kind than the last: And that Expresses were forwarded Northerly to all the Governments, to come as far as New York. It is Said two Regiments are to be sent from thence to South Carolina.
