STANZAS.

What is this world at best ?
Tho' decked in vernal bloom,
By Hope and youthful fancy drest,
What but a ceaseless toil for rest,
A passage to the tomb ?

If flowers strew
The avenue,
Tho' fair, alas, how fading and how few.

The rose of pleasure blooms to-day,
To-morrow, hastens to decay;
Joy, like the dew of morning fair,
Just sparkles, and dissolves in air,
Like beam of light,
The vision bright
Has fled away
With parting day,
And left my soul in double night.

But not so soon will grief depart,
The feelings of a wounded heart
In spite of time himself endure,
He does but soothe, he cannot cure;
Still, still I weep for Laura dead,
Altho' the trees
That in the breeze
Lamenting wave
Above her grave
Have thrice thereon their foliage shed.
