The Lyon County Times is rather severe on the Supreme Court, because the case of Lyon vs. Esmeralda county, which was sent up to that tribunal last April, has not yet been decided. The Times intimates that there is jobbery on foot, and says it is reported that during the campaign Judge Hawley intimated to the people of Esmeralda county that the decision, when rendered, would be in their favor; and that he also gave certain persons in Lyon county to believe that the decision would favor that county.
These are ugly insinuations, which Judge Hawley and his associates on the Supreme bench cannot afford to pass unnoticed. It is the first time that the integrity of the highest tribunal in the State has been questioned. Hitherto, when Legislatures were charged with corruption, the people had implicit confidence in the Court of last resort, never suspecting for a moment that its opinions could be influenced by the threats or money of individuals or corporations.
