Smith and the Clintons. Are the Clintons for Smith or Madison? It would be a little difficult, perhaps, to tell from the Columbian. [The Clinton paper in New-York.] It would seem from an examination of its columns, that it inclines to favor Smith, but does not yet feel strong enough to let go entirely all hold of the skirts of Madison's garments. The following toast drank publicly at the celebration of the late anniversary by Mr. Clinton's leading and most influential partisan in Duchess County, gen. Van Ness, shews distinctly how the wind blows and is to blow, notwithstanding the awkward attempts of the Columbian to conceal the fact a little longer.
VOLUNTEER.
By the President. Robert Smith, the late Secretary of State; he deserves well of his country.
