Waterville, March 1—By a scant majority of 51 votes, Dr. Herbert C. Libby was elected the Republican mayor of Waterville today over Harold Dubord, his Democratic opponent.
The total vote polled was 6,007, 451 more than ever before and of these 3029 were for Dr. Libby and 2978 for Mr. Dubord.
The heavy vote came as a surprise as the weather through the day was stormy.
Dr. Libby will have the support of a board of aldermen made up of five Republicans and two democrats. The Republicans being Timothy F. Cowan, Ward 1; Frank E. Carter, Ward 2; George H. Dews, Ward 3; W. Arthur Farwell, Ward 4; S. E. Whitcomb, Ward 5; and the two Democrats being Joseph Michaud of Ward 6; J. Thomas Page, Jr., of Ward 7.
Harry M. Hilton, Republican, of Ward 5, was reelected to the school board for a term of three years over L. Eugene Thayer, by a vote of 701 to 314; and Mrs. Alice Morin, Democrat, was reelected in Ward 6 by a vote of 531 to 198 for William C. Herman. In Ward 7, Harry Belliveau, Democrat, was elected to take the place of S. Harold Dubord, the member from Ward 7, defeating John R. LaFleur by a vote of 701 to 178.
