Five of Weischert's Strikers Arraigned in Court.
Five striking shoemakers were this morning, in the Lee Avenue Police Court, Williamsburg, held for examination on charges of riot and assault at Weischert's shoe factory, 34 to 38 Boerum Street, Brooklyn. They were Frank Rockhurst, 29 Beaver street; Frank Bechel, 27 Stagg street; Wilber N. Glover, Marcy avenue and Havemeyer street; Francisco Silva, 29 Boerum street, and Frank Ritter, 43 Johnson avenue.
The prisoners were accused of having last evening assaulted non-union men, who, under the protection of the police of the Sixteenth Precinct, were being escorted from the factory to their homes.
Since the strike began, a month ago, the strikers have repeatedly assaulted men who have looked for work at the factory.
For some reason the men escaped arrest and became emboldened by the alleged apathy of the police. At 6:30 o'clock last evening the non-union employees, in charge of a squad of police headed by Roundsman Halloran, of the Sixth Precinct, marched the men to Broadway, where those living in the Sixteenth Precinct were turned over to the police of that precinct, under charge of Sergt. Hamilton.
The men in charge of the Sixteenth Precinct police were at the corner of Harrison avenue and Lynch street, when Frank Rockhurst, a locked-out turner, assaulted Charles Reiss, foreman of the shoe factory.
Following the blow came an assault on the men and the police, which seemed to come from all directions.
A hollow square was formed with the non-union men in the centre.
Armed with sticks, stones and clubs the wives of the strikers joined in the assault on the police.
A crowd cheered the attacking party, which was finally dispersed by the police. Very few of the policemen received any marks in the attack.
