Seminoles Wary
Of Weather Balloon
Miami, Fla.—(AP)—Florida's first
war scare occurred deep in the
Everglades, among the state's real
pioneers—the Seminole Indians.
Since word of a great conflict
had filtered into the wilderness,
the Indians were suspicious when
they noticed a strange balloon
high in the sky. Indian watchers
followed it cautiously for 30 miles
or more, and inspected it at a safe
distance when it finally settled to
earth.
It turned out to be a mechanical
stratosphere observer from the
United States weather bureau at
Miami, and the Indians were rewarded for returning it.
