From Brunswick. (Me.) May 16.
"Our situation is melancholy indeed; the wind varying from S. E. to N. E. has rained incessantly for six days. The Androscoggin is higher than it has been for 29 years, and now rising fast; eight saw mills, owned by the Honourable Benjamin J. Porter, N. Quint, H. Purington, John Rogers and others, have gone.—Mr. Haley's fulling mill, and the extensive and valuable aqueduct are swept away; a great part of the bridge between Topsham and Brunswick, is carried away by the mills and logs H. Putnam's valuable new grist mill has started, but saved for the present, by great exertions of the inhabitants, yet must soon be lost if the freshet rises higher—The Woollen and Cotton Factories have suffered injury. and are in imminent danger, all the looms are destroyed, and logs to the amount of $100,000 have gone to sea. Many mills and other buildings have gone over the falls—but what the extent of damage is we know not as yet. It still rains hard, and probably every building on the river will be lost."
