MADRID SEES BREAK UP OF REBEL OFFENSIVES

MADRID, Dec. 19. (UP)

Neutral observers, including military experts, said today that Gen. Francisco Franco's Fascist revolution may pound itself to pieces against the walls of Madrid.

The capital, they believed, is fortified like a feudal fortress and its stalwart defense, which has brought about an amazing rejuvenation of loyalist morale after months of defeats, is aided by severe cold in the surrounding Guadarrama mountains.

Franco's fiercest fighters, the Moroccans, are unaccustomed to such rigorous weather and resent it.

Five months have passed, military authorities point out, and the big prizes of the war—Madrid, Barcelona and other large cities—still are in possession of the government.

The military junta here has evacuated refugees from subway stations and is finding them "safe residences" in high modern office buildings in the so-called neutral zones.
