Full Text

Melancholy Disaster.—About two o'clock on Saturday afternoon, as the yawl of the Pilot Boat Grand Canal, was conveying Messrs. P. W. Woodruff, S. Townsend, of New York, cabin passengers, and Mr. Scott of do. steerage passenger, from the ship John Linton, from New Orleans, then at anchor in the Bay, blowing very fresh and a heavy sea, the boat filled, and the two latter, with Thos. Webb, an apprentice of the pilot boat were drowned. Thomas Freeborn, another apprentice, and Mr. P. W. Woodruff, were saved by a boat from the ship.

We understand, says the Gazette, that Mr. Townsend resided in Eldridge street. We learn that the yawl had proceeded about one mile from the ship, on her way to the pilot boat, when a sea struck her abaft, where the passengers were seated, whose weight, together with the influx of water, completely swamped the boat. The wind on Saturday was unusually strong from the northwest, and the sea, of course was extremely rough.—N. Y. American.
