Full Text

COMMISSIONER OF PATENTS.—The appointment of Judge Holt, late Commissioner of Patents, to the office of Postmaster General, has left that office vacant: Hon. Samuel T. Shugart, the Chief Clerk in the Patent Office, being now the acting head of that department. Mr. Shugart has long been connected with the Patent Office and few other men, perhaps no man is better acquainted with the Patent Laws, and the details of its business, than he.— As the place will have to be filled, we would suggest, with all due deference to the wisdom of the distinguished Executive of the nation, that a man so familiar with the duties and so worthy of the post, should not be overlooked in the selecting a successor to Judge Holt: and we have no hesitation in saying that his appointment would be approved by the voice of the whole country.
