THE CAMERA HUNTER
To the hunter with the camera every wild creature is lawful and desirable game, and the open season lasts 12 months in the year. It is a most exciting sport "shooting" at birds in flight. In Florida the camera hunter stops his boat in a good locality and withdraws the slide from the plate, and waits in instant readiness for whatever may come along. A water turkey wings past, visible, as it advances, upon the ground-glass. The middle finger and thumb of the left hand turn a screw and focus, the thumb of the right presses the trigger, and the bird is ours, though it still continues its rapid flight a thousandfold more valuable in this form than if maimed and mauled, for thousands of people can now see it, and the splendid scene as well. The writer is called a good shot with the gun, but what care I now for my gun-which hangs long neglected in a closet-as compared with my cameras! And what surprising things these flight pictures show! Who, for instance, would imagine that a bird could ever assume such a grotesque attitude as does the cormorant, when she springs from her nest?
