RICHARD M. JOHNSON.

A report prevails, which we noticed in our paper of the 14th inst. that this gentleman will be called to the head of the Post Office Department, in the room of R. J. Meigs, who is about to retire.

We are not in possession of such information on the subject, as to enable us to say this change will take place; nor should we again have noticed it if a print from a neighbouring state had not made some ungenerous remarks respecting Colonel Johnson, on account of the post office at the Great Crossings, which we accidentally saw, (for the editors have declined an exchange.)

We are not willing, at any time to occupy our columns in mere puffing or unmerited praise. We believe Col. Johnson stands too high with his fellow citizens in this country, to be injured by such remarks. But it may be proper to state; for the information of those Editors (who, we are confident, will readily make the communication to their readers,) that it appears, by a reference to the register of officers for 1818, that there are in the United States, more than two thousand post offices, which are less productive to the government than that of the Great Crossings. The fact is, the population accommodated by that office, is very considerable, and by no means confined to the "Johnson family." Besides, we are not certain that Colonel James Johnson has been much benefited by his contract to carry the Mail in stages. Should he be able to continue its transportation with the same expedition, it must be very agreeable to the people of Kentucky—other contractors have attempted this important service from Pittsburgh to this state, without success. It is an undertaking of immense trouble and expense; and we are not prepared to state its advantages to the contractor, but should be pleased to hear that he sustains no loss. Pub. Adv.
