POSTMASTER HARRIS TELLS OF FIVE NEW ISSUES DURING AUGUST
Postmaster Harris informed The Citizen today that during August there will be five new stamp issues, four new values in the Presidential series and the Iowa commemorative. The first of these stamps made its appearance on August 4; it is the 7 cent value, in sepia, of the Presidential series. The portrait on the stamp is Andrew Jackson and is taken from the bust by Belle Kinney which is now in the Hall of Fame, New York City. The 8-cent value of sepia color is to appear on August 11, it shows the portrait of Martin Van Buren, from the bust by U. S. J. Dunbar which now is in the United States Capitol Building at Washington, D. C. The 9-cent value, in light pink, will appear August 18 and bears the portrait of William Henry Harrison by Chester Beach now in the Virginia State Capitol at Richmond. The $1 value will appear August 29 and will bear the portrait of Woodrow Wilson taken from a medal furnished by his United States Mint. This stamp is to be bi-colored, with black center and violet border. The portraits of Martin Van Buren on the 8-cent value and William H. Harrison on the 9-cent value have never before appeared on the stamps of the United States. The Iowa Centennial stamp will appear on August 24, the opening day of the Iowa State Fair at Des Moines, Iowa. This stamp commemorates the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Iowa Territory with the territorial form of government.
