Parking Conditions On Broad And Main Streets Problem Before Council

Clayton Hoey appeared before the Borough Council at their regular meeting, on Tuesday evening, and representing a number of commuters to Wilmington, made a request that the Council pass a resolution asking the Wilson Line Company that the 7 o'clock boat from Penns Grove to Wilmington be restored. At the present time the boats run only at 6 and 9, which makes it very inconvenient for commuters. It is hoped that the Wilson Line Company will put on the schedule the boat asked for.

The people over in the Highland Park Tract are encountering some inconveniences as the land in that vicinity is not what the name of the tract implies. A stretch of about 200 feet on Virginia Avenue, between Willis and Diver Avenues, is clayey and muddy and the people in that region, represented by William Pansey, made a request for some relief from the inconvenience. There was little doubt in the minds of the councilmen but that the matter should be remedied and the Street Supervisor was instructed to place some cinders there.

A little light would also be appreciated by the people in that section, but at the present time that request could not be granted, although the inhabitants showed a willing spirit to co-operate with the council, agreeing to have the poles erected themselves.

This was the first regular meeting with our new Mayor, Robert M. Walker, in the chair, but his number of years as a member of council and his familiarity with the duties, having acted in that capacity, his execution of the gavel caused no concern. All of the members were present, but the ranks are more depleted than ever since the resignation of Mr. Kidd, and now there are only Messrs. Gillison, Long, Sailor and Dolbow in the chairs of administration.

A large amount of taxes having been received the Borough coffers are now back to normal after a depletion at the last meeting with the transfer of school moneys.

The report of Borough Treasurer D. P. Featherer was as follows:

Balance last meeting 33,948.17
Rec'd taxes and int, 5,932.94
Paid out 1,168.71
Special interest acct. 5.419.11
Lic. fees, misc. rev. 2,037.18
Trust fund 200.00
Street Improvement acct. 2,484.32

The question of parking on both sides of our main streets was discussed somewhat in detail, as present conditions evidently need remedying.

The Saturday conditions are ones which are most perplexing, as when cars line both sides of Broad and Main Streets there is no room for traffic and trolley cars and it is a common sight to see an automobile backing up considerable distance to permit the passage of a trolley. Not only an inconvenience, it is also a fire hazard, as pointed out by Mr. Long, for if the fire engine should be called forth with a trolley in the vicinity, one or the other would have to retreat, requiring a loss of valuable time.

The proposal now is to secure a public parking place for cars, with an officer in charge. The most desirable sites are the Hunt property at the corner of State Street and Railroad Avenue and the Workman property, on Main Street, at the side of the Broad Theatre.

At the recommendation of Mayor Walker, Joseph Craig was voted a member of the Fire Company to fill a vacancy.

The contract for the electric lights, for a period of five years, was presented by the Solicitor and signed by the Mayor and light committee.

Fire Chief Johnson presented a request for purchase of three rubber coats and three pair of boots, a quantity of bicarbonate of soda and some rattan brooms which were ordered purchased as there are still funds in the budget for the Fire Company
