Full Text

Senator Douglas' Election.

A correspondent of the Missouri Republican gives a spirited description of the manner in which Senator Douglas was elected by the Illinois Legislature. After the House was called to order, the members of the Senate made their appearance in a body, and took seats on the left side of the Hall. An immense throng filled the House, to witness the interesting event. The venerable Mr. Barrett, the oldest member of either branch of the Legislature, nominated Stephen A. Douglas for U. S. Senator. Senator Judd, then nominated Mr. Lincoln. During the time of the calling of the roll the utmost stillness prevailed throughout the thronged assembly; not a sound was heard save the voice of the Clerk and the full response of the members. But when it was announced that Senator Douglas had received a majority of all the votes, one wild, deafening uproar of applause burst like a whirlwind from all parts of the vast galleries and lobbies, and no efforts of the Speaker or Door-keepers could for a moment control the excited and jubilant throng. However, a motion to adjourn instantly upon the nomination, had been agreed upon, and was immediately carried out; when the immense crowd, including members and outsiders, gave vent to a perfect storm of hurrahs and congratulations.

Upon the restoration of comparative quiet, loud calls were made for Mr. Barrett, who, with a number of other speakers, addressed the crowd in appropriate remarks.

Meanwhile the Democratic gun was belching forth peal after peal of genuine thunder, and a splendid band discoursing merry notes of music from Curran's Balcony. The Senate upon retiring to the own hall, immediately adjourned, and the members doubtless "drowned their fears" or elevated their enthusiasm in gentle draughts of the exhilarating fluid, found at Doule's.
