HORRID MURDERS IN PITTSBURG.—

Charles Diehl, who murdered his wife and child at Pittsburg on Monday last, nearly killed a second child, and then attempted to commit suicide, was an ornamental painter, from Lancaster.—

The Post of Tuesday says: "His victim was an exceedingly amiable woman whose only fault was too great a devotion to a husband unable to appreciate her excellent qualities Her father (named Dagnan) lives in Greensburg, and she has a brother, a painter, in Greensburg or Hollidaysburgh. She was raised by her grandfather chiefly, a man named Philips, who kept a large stage tavern at Manayunk, a few miles from Philadelphia, and was married under the name of Mary Philips. Her uncle now keeps the tavern, or lives near there. she was about 30 years of age and, when a girl, was handsome. They had four children—the oldest is a girl between 8 and 9 years of age. The second is absent at Georgetown, and is between 6 and 7; the third so dangerously hurt, is about 5 years old; and little Mary Ann whom he killed by dashing her head against the wall, was 3 years old. The wounded child was still living, but there was very little hope of its recovery. Its head is dreadfully cut, and one of its eyes is knocked out. The little girl that escaped says her father was not drunk yesterday morning. He desired her mother on Sunday to get him some whiskey which she refused to do, and he then swore that he would kill her in the morning: he kept his promise fearfully. Diehl is represented by those who are acquainted with him as an inoffensive man, but given to intemperate habits." After the gashes in his neck were sewed up, he was sent to jail for the present, the state of his wounds, and the excitement of the crowd at the office, preventing the Mayor from holding an examination.—Pennsylvanian.
