The Senate, on Tuesday, was crowded to hear Mr. Choate, who made one of his most eloquent and cogent arguments against annexation, mainly on constitutional grounds. He also pointed out the alleged inexpediency of such a step, and made a very pointed and powerful response to Mr. Woodbury's attack upon Massachusetts. His speech is said to have been fully equal to his best efforts.
Mr. Archer presented a memorial from 2000 persons for a change in the naturalization laws, and Mr. Berrien, in reply to a question from Mr. Allen, said that the committee intended to urge the action of the Senate upon this subject, as soon as the labors of the Commissioners had been concluded.
In the House, the bill appropriating $20,000, half for repairing and half for furnishing, the President's House, was debated at some length, and a motion made by Mr. Henley, to limit the expenditure to $10,000, was rejected. Sundry amendments were proposed and rejected, and was also the bill itself—ayes 62, noes 72. The House then went into Committee of the Whole, and the appropriation bill was taken up. A motion to appropriate $5000, (the usual sum,) to the purchase of books for the Library, instead of $2500, as reported by the Committee of Ways and Means, was carried, and without transacting any other business of importance, the House adjourned.—N. Y. Cour. & Enq.
