Back To Work Orders Issued by "Little Steel" While Mediation Efforts Frantically Resumed

(By The Associated Press)

CLEVELAND, June 22--"Little Steel" issued "back to work" marching orders with the zero hour set for 7 a.m. tomorrow, involving about twenty-four thousand men in the strike ravaged Youngstown area, as Federal Mediators strove desperately at Cleveland to effect a settlement.

The back to work challenge was announced jointly by Frank Purnell, president of Youngstown Sheet Tube and Republic Steel and drew a swift counter challenge that as "soon as somebody goes to those plants there will be plenty trouble--there are so many of the boys there they won't go in", said John Mayor, director of the Steel Organizing Committee to Girdler, chairman of Republic Steel Corporation, who flatly told the federal steel mediation board that he would not enter into a contract with C.I.O.

Federal Steel Mediation Board Works For Peaceful Settlement

(By The Associated Press)

Federal steel mediation board is laboring on a formula designed to shift the seven-state steel strike from open warfare on the picket lines to a peaceful settlement around a conference table. That difficult task brightened by agreement of union chieftains and company executives to meet separately here tomorrow, and which was made more urgent by a week-end of fatal rioting at the gates of Republics mills at Youngstown, by a martial law order to close Bethlehems vast Cambria plant at Johnstown and sporadic violence on the Canton strike-front.

Another difficulty was added to efforts to settle the conflict when the teamsters and chauffeurs union called a strike of 1880 truck drivers.

Leaders said 2500 drivers would be affected. The death of a strike picket and the wounding of 31 peace officers and strike sympathizers including Mary Heaton Vorse and two other women in three hours of battling at Youngstown left the strike centers tense and on guard against further violence.

Peace officers charged that pickets planned the riot 'in advance' and started it by attacking police.

Union leaders asserted that police began the fighting by an attempt to disperse picket groups at the mill, starting three hours of battling with tear gas bullets and stones.

LOOKING AT STEEL DISPUTE

(By The Associated Press)

WASHINGTON, D. C., June 22--The Senate Postoffice Committee turned to motion pictures for new evidence in its inquiry into the conduct of strikers and steel companies in the current strife.

Scheduled to be exhibited to committee members were several hundred feet of film showing how strikers are interfering with Interstate commerce by pulling up railroad ties, wrecking switches and forcibly re-routing freight cars.

Rejects CIO Offer

Strike was called imminent by labor leaders after Inland Steel, major independent of the Chicago area, refused to give C.I.O. steel organizing branch a collective-bargaining contract.

Company representative Harry E. Roulis, is shown leaving the meeting where the decision was made.
