"This being the anniversary of the 4th of July,
a number of gentlemen from the neighbourhood
assembled in order to commemorate it, which was
done in the following manner:
The day was ushered in by a discharge of cannon,
at sun-rise: at eleven of the clock another
gun was fired as a signal for collecting, when they
all met at the Academy, from whence, at half past
eleven, they moved in procession to the Court-
house, where two elegant orations, adapted to the
occasion, were delivered by Mr. Oliver Kerr and
Mr. James Wilkins. The close was announced by
a discharge of thirteen cannon, when the gentlemen
moved, in the same procession as before, to
the house of Capt. Henry A. Williams, where a
dinner was provided, and the following toasts
drank, under a discharge of cannon, viz.
1. The ever Memorable 4th of July, 1776
2d. The United States in Congress assembled.
3d. His Excellency General George Washington.
and the Federal Convention.—4th. His Excellency
Governor Clinton, and State of New-York.
5th. Our Illustrious Ally, LEWIS the SIX-
TEENTH.—6th. The Memory of those He-
roes who fell in Defence of their Country.—
7th. The Officers and Soldiers who survived the
Contest.—8th. Our Ambassadors at Foreign
Courts.—9th. Agriculture and Commerce. —
10th. All Schools, and Seminaries of Learning.—
11th. The Continuance and Increase of that Vir-
tuous and Independent Spirit which gave Birth to
the Revolution.—12th. May Wisdom direct
our Public Councils, and Prudence, Integrity, and
Fortitude, distinguish our Public Magistrates.—
13th. Peace, with the Rights and Privileges of
Freemen, or war for ever.
The day was closed at sun-set, by firing one
round. The utmost harmony subsisted amongst all
ranks of people during the whole day, and at evening
the house of Capt. Williams was completely
illuminated. Between ten and eleven o'clock all
was well."
