Full Text

No war, in which we have not been actually engaged, has ever been more interesting to us, than that now carrying on by Russia against the Turks. Should the Empress ever establish her arms at Constantinople, her navy would soon become respectable in the South as well as the North; and scarcely any fleet would be sufficient to the defence of our Levant trade, in case of a war against her cruizers, to whom so many ports would be open. The Grand fleet of Russia, which is now arming with all possible dispatch, will consist of 36 ships of the line, carrying from 100 to 64 guns each. The fleet is expected to be ready for sea, as soon as the ports are free from ice, at which time a light squadron will be completed, consisting of 12 frigates, 30 gallies, 30 chebecks, and 300 armed shallops, on board of which 24,000 sailors and soldiers will be embarked.

No war in which Britain has not been engaged has been more interesting than the current one between Russia and the Turks. If the Empress establishes her arms at Constantinople, her navy would become respectable in the South as well as North, threatening British Levant trade against her cruisers with many open ports. The Grand fleet of Russia, arming with dispatch, will consist of 36 ships of the line carrying 64 to 100 guns each, ready for sea when ports are ice-free. A light squadron will include 12 frigates, 30 gallies, 30 chebecks, and 300 armed shallops, embarking 24,000 sailors and soldiers.
