Negro Called For Madison County Grand Jury

Canton, Miss., Sept. 26.-A Negro Thursday was empaneled on a Madison County grand jury that was to consider the case of five Negroes charged with the brutal beating of a white constable.

The Negro, Walter Brown, 49, owns and operates a 150-acre farm 10 miles east of here. The farm is near where Constable E. B. Cauthen was beaten with poles and a tire iron by a group of Negroes whose truck he stopped several months ago.

Court officials said they believed it was the first time in many years that a Negro had served on a grand jury in the county.
