Mr. Force, Sir:--Your correspondent, Lowndes in his "Next President, No. 3." makes use of the following expressions:
"In Maine an attempt was made in favor of Mr. Crawford, by several persons who had professed great popularity, but the moment that the question came to the people, it was crushed to impotence. An attempt of the same kind was made in New Hampshire, but with the same fate."
So far as New-Hampshire is concerned in the above charge, which seems to have been gratuitously made by your correspondent, she claims the right to deny the assertions of Lowndes, and calls upon him for his proofs.
New-Hampshire has long considered J. Q. Adams as the most prominent candidate for the Presidency. No citizens made any attempt. Nor have her citizens evinced any or change in her quiet impression in favor of Mr. Adams for the Presidency, amidst the storm of conflicting opinions which if we may judge from the public journals, agitates many other portions of the United States.
As a State, she contemplates with no inconsiderable concern that spirit of ribaldry and detraction, which induces the conductors of public journals to traduce the characters of so many of our most prominent statesmen, of whose talents the nation ought to entertain an elevated opinion, and whose reputations we ought to protect, as forming a brilliant constellation, adding lustre to our national character.
