Ceylon Has World's First Woman Prime Minister

COLOMBO, Ceylon (AP)—Mrs. Sirimavo Bandaranaike, a 44-year-old widow whose name means "fortunate one," was sworn in yesterday as Ceylon's prime minister, defense minister, and foreign minister.

Massive crowds, mostly women, watched and cheered as the world's first prime minister entered Gov. Gen. Sir Oliver Goonetilleke's residence for the ceremony.

The governor general escorted her to a balcony where she acknowledged the cheers with the Eastern style salute in which the palms are placed together and raised.

Mrs. Bandaranaike wore a plain white cotton saree for the ceremony which installed her as head of the government in this island of 10 million.

She was called to the post after election returns assured her leftist-backed Freedom party a parliamentary majority.
