Full Text
The letter of Col. Lewis Cass, to the secretary of war, fills us with grief and astonishment it furnishes no proof that gen. Hull was a traitor: At best (if we are to speak in favour of the administration) it only goes to prove, that gen. Hull was unfit for the command, owing either to cowardice, or want of judgment. If col. Cass was authorized by the other field officers to offer the statement made, as founded in fact, the communication to the secretary of war was in the proper form the service requires, according to usage long practiced in the European service But to publish it to the world as evidence of gen. Hull's guilt, previous to hearing him in his own defence, has no precedent ! On the part of the secretary of war, it is an action as base as it is wicked and Dangerous.
The transaction stands in an official form, because the letter was directed to the secretary of war, and, of course, by him passed to the publisher.
Gen. Hull has been condemned without a trial—or without even being heard in his defence, by Mr. Madison and his secretary of war.
