Through the kindness of Wm. Dahl, Esq., we have been permitted to make the following extract from a letter received by him from a relative bearing date 10th ult., by which it will be seen that a more destructive conflagration than that which visited that ill-fated colony a little over a year since, has again befallen it. The writer says:
"I have once more to announce to you that on the 25th of October we were again visited by a destructive fire, much more so than that of last year. It commenced on the east branch of the river Seine, burning in its onward march men, horses and hay. Wm. Lilly and Wm. Knight were both severely burned. There is some hope that Lilly may recover; but poor Knight died on the 7th inst., from the internal as well as external injuries he received. He leaves a dependent family. This is the largest fire I ever saw, and the suffering will be immense, as those who suffered most severely were least prepared to stand it... There has been much sickness and death here during the last summer and fall, and the whooping cough still prevails among the children."
