Passing of the Gondola.

The romantic gondolas no longer hold full sway on the beautiful canals of Venice. They have been replaced not by steam or gasoline launches but the American motor boats. The first motor boats on the canal were those ordered by wealthy Americans and Venetians, desirous of greater speed and comfort than was attainable with the gondolas. Then the city took a hand and established the transportation system of its own.

The fare on the municipal motor boats is about two cents in our money. One great advantage of the American motor boat over the gasoline or steam launch is that it does not "kick up" the waves against the houses as do those higher built craft. It is contended that the romantic gondola is doomed on account of the American invasion of motor boats. The advance is less beautiful, but more practical. Instead of the gentle song of the gondolier, is heard the whistle of the motor boat.
