OUR DEFINITION FORUM

Wherein we seek the subtler heights and depths; the higher, broader view

Conscience

All the raw material of heredity and environment going into the human mechanism to make man is brought forth refined-perhaps-and sludged. A large percentage of man's energy system operates through the unconscious. Only when man contends with external forces does he behave unseemly. Question: Is there some interceding arrangement by which to govern man's passion? Answer: Culture has developed a super-ego or ideal which the man-in-the-street calls sportsmanship: sociologists, ethics; theologians, conscience. Civilization decrees that you choose from these three. But, human nature being what it is. you probably will insist on a liberal portion from each.- H. W.
