Extract of a letter to a gentleman in this city, dated
"Knoxville, (Tenn.) April 17.
"George Washington Campbell has declined a re-election to congress. The legislature, now in session, on the 11th instant, elected two senators in the congress of the United States; Joseph Anderson's term of service having expired, and gen. Smith, who had two years to serve, resigned. The votes were for a senator from East Tennessee,

Jenkins Whiteside, 227
Gen. J. Winchester, 165
J. Whiteside elected.
Gen. Winchester, being perfectly indifferent on the subject, made no interest personally."
