Remarks on Some of Its Attendants From Clarksburg.
To the Editor of the Register:
CLARKSBURG, W. VA., Aug. 7.—It is with no degree of surprise that I observed among the distinguished and influential Republicans in attendance at the Bank Hall conference last week, such representative Republicans as Phil. Clifford, Dr. Morgan, and A. L. Hustead. Phil. Clifford is a young Irishman of Democratic parentage, and no doubt if his Pap could control him would be a Democrat now, as he was after leaving school. But the young man is stubborn beyond old man Clifford's control. No doubt Phil. is an honest Republican, and probably he will make a leader in his party, but does his short alliance with his second line entitle him to a high seat in the councils of the party? I think not.
Dr. Morgan, first a Democrat, then a Greenbacker, now a Republican. Is he entitled to front seat? I think not.
A. L. Hustead, who is he? Not a Republican of much influence, I am sure.
These are the gentlemen who represented the Republican party, and as I believe, Republican county of Harrison. Now, I will ask the Intelligencer if it thinks these men are representative Republicans of old Harrison? If the conference was composed of such men as above who claim to act and represent our party, then God help the party. I am disposed to think the Intelligencer made a mistake when it advertised this conference, which has turned to be a very poor blunder. The converted editor of the Intelligencer certainly is not familiar with the names of the Republicans of this State. If Archie Campbell were at the head of the concern in Wheeling I feel confident he would know a Republican of some influence when he saw him. But, then, Hart is not Campbell. Let us hope for better things at the next conference.
